Why SERVPRO for, Construction Protection

6/13/2023 (Permalink)

Every construction project, no matter how large or small, will create a cleaning project. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep post construction cleaning to a minimum, all of which SERVPRO of Lodi can provide. We work with numerous local remodeling contractors to be sure your home is kept clean and dust free throughout the rebuilding process.

Pre-construction site protection certainly has some financial benefits. It will reduce required labor, prevent incidental damage to unprotected areas, and shorten project lifetime. Containment also has some safety benefits – it creates a safety barrier to keep non-construction people away from the work area and it will help prevent the spread of airborne particles/construction dust, some of which may be toxic and difficult to clean completely.

Overtime these particles settle over surfaces and belongings, traveling through HVAC systems and permeating throughout the home. It is possible to suffer from post construction dust for months or even years, especially if the HVAC system has not been properly sealed or cleaned. This can negatively affect the occupants, chiefly those with compromised immune systems or those sensitive to allergens.

Our IICRC certified team creates a site protection plan in accordance to each customer’s unique needs. Construction and site protection can at times be obstructive to those who choose to occupy the home throughout the project. However, our team strives to design contaminate shields that won’t compromise the occupants’ use of the home. By utilizing our vast range of materials to protect HVAC systems, carpeting, walls, ceilings, and everything in between, SERVPRO of Lodi can save you time and best of all money.

Rain, Rain Go Away!

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

With the relentless series of storms we've seen since last December, SERVPRO of Lodi has seen a marked increase in water damage from roof leaks. Roof leaks can be a challenge to deal with! A roof leak happens at the worst possible time, typically during the peak of a heavy rain or windstorm.

A roof will leak for a number of reasons, including shoddy construction, holes made by animals, missing shingles thanks to intense wind and rain, problems with plumbing vents, damaged flashing and clogged and overflowing gutters. Consider the age of the roof, too. It may be so old and worn that it’s time for a proper replacement. Additionally, skylights and chimneys traditionally leak because they’re essentially sealed holes in the roof! There's a joke, there's 2 types of skylights, those that leak and those that will....

Typically you’ll see a stain on a wall or ceiling that’ll give you an idea you have a leak coming from somewhere.

In extreme cases SERVPRO of Lodi has been called out when the ceiling has already come crashing down. The insulation in attics is very absorbent and can hold quite a bit of water; a slow leak can take weeks sometimes to reveal itself, usually with a loud crash and ceiling drywall and insulation covering everything in the house!

The best time to trace where the leak is coming from is to examine its trail as best you can when it’s raining outside. SERVPRO of Lodi has the tools to help track the leak to its source. Once it's found, a roofer can come by and either temporarily tarp the roof or get it repaired if the rains stopped! SERVPRO of Lodi is "Here to Help" 24/7

Why SERVPRO for Construction Protection

6/5/2019 (Permalink)

By utilizing our vast range of materials to protect HVAC systems, carpeting, walls, ceilings, and everything in between, SERVPRO of Lodi can save you time, money and headaches.

Why SERVPRO for Fire Restoration

6/5/2019 (Permalink)

There are numerous causes of fires in homes and businesses. Depending on what materials burn, this can produce different types of smoke and soot.

Below is a list of the types of smoke and soot and their characteristics:

Wet Smoke – Caused by burning plastics and synthetic materials; Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.

Dry Smoke – Caused by burning paper and wood; Fast burning, high temperatures, dry, powdery, non-smeary residues.

Protein – Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fuel Oil Soot – Furnace Puff Backs. Other Types – Tear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue.

What to do after a fire:

  • Keep hands clean and wear gloves so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas to avoid spreading soot.
  • If the electricity is off, empty the freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open to avoid odor from rotting food.
  • Clean and protect chrome with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants gently on both sides of leaves.

What NOT to do after a fire:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting SERVPRO of Lodi.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.

When Contents Are Affected By Mold

6/5/2019 (Permalink)

If mold has affected a sizable spot of your home it is critical to have it professionally remediated.  But what do you do when mold affects other things - the contents and furnishings such as toys, contents, playthings, blankets, bedding, books and clothing? We see an increase in mold issues after heavy Spring rains such as those we had this year in LODI.

Here are our common sense suggestions:

Bath Toys - often fill with trapped water, mold breeding ground.  DISCARD.

Bedding/Blankets/Clothing - Fibers are food for mold and generally even laundering at sterilize settings may not remove the odor.  DISCARD & REPLACE.

Books - Paper and glue are food for mold.  DISCARD.

Plush Toys - DISCARD.

Hard Surface Plastic and Wood Contents- can sometimes be cleaned.

What if it is a special item, though recommended for discard?  Ask us - we will advise if there is a chance it can be restored in any way.  We understand some items have sentimental value but they may no longer be suitable for use.

We recommend that an independent assessment be completed when you have visible mold in your home over 10 SF.  They will report which specific items must be discarded when we come in to remediate your mold.

Go Away Rain!

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO to Help with Your Home or Business That Has a Mold Problem ?

6/9/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Lodi can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
